MagSim Knowledge · Toroid Core Basics
Toroid Core Technical Drawing
A technical drawing is more than a dimensioned view: title block, tolerance callouts and scale all follow fixed standards. For an electrical component like a toroid core, one more requirement comes on top that a purely mechanical drawing doesn't cover – the simulated electrical performance data. How that fits together, and how MagSim generates both automatically, is what this article covers.
What a standards-compliant drawing needs mechanically
For a technical drawing to be read the same way by any workshop or manufacturer, its structure and content follow fixed standards instead of free-form layout:
- title block per EN ISO 7200
- general tolerances per ISO 2768-1
- true-to-scale dimensioning
- unambiguous sheet format
If any of these elements is missing or filled in inconsistently, the drawing is, strictly speaking, not standards-compliant – even if the geometry itself is drawn correctly.
The extra requirement for toroid cores: electrical performance data
A purely mechanical drawing shows diameter, height and tolerances – enough for a housing part, but not for a magnetic toroid core. Anyone using the core also needs: the core material used with its nominal permeability, plus the AL value and impedance curve over frequency with the practically relevant tolerance points – data that comes from a simulation, not from geometry alone.
How MagSim handles this for you
MagSim automatically generates a two-page A4 drawing: page 1 the classic, standards-compliant construction drawing including a title block with nominal permeability, page 2 the simulated AL and impedance curves as a chart with the five required tolerance points and a matching tolerance table. Both pages come from the same underlying dataset – always in English regardless of the UI language, so the drawing can be used internationally without translation.
Two pages, one document
True-to-scale view, dimensioning, title block with core material and nominal permeability, true A4 landscape format.
AL and impedance curves as a chart, tolerance points at 10 kHz/100 kHz (AL) and 600 kHz/2 MHz/60 MHz (|Z|), tolerance table.

What has to be in a standards-compliant title block?
The layout and placement of the title block is governed by EN ISO 7200 – it includes, among other things, the part designation, scale, material and drawing number.
Why is the MagSim drawing always in English, even when the interface is set to German?
So the drawing can be handed straight to international manufacturers without further translation – regardless of the language it was generated in.
What do the tolerance points on page 2 mean?
They show the band within which the real AL value or real impedance may fall at each stated frequency – important when comparing against later-measured cores.
